Russian deep tissue massage
What is a Russian Deep Tissue Massage?
It is a type of massage that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It can help restore and improve fascia’s flexibility (the tissue that surrounds the muscles and organs). Some of the strokes used during Russian deep tissue massage are the same as in Swedish massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.
This type of massage is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. According to the 2005 August issue of Consumer Reports magazine, thirty-four thousand people ranked deep tissue massage more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medications, chiropractic care, acupuncture, diet, glucosamine, and over-the-counter drugs. In my own practice, I have observed that Russian deep tissue massage can be helpful in cases of:
- Chronic pain
- Limited mobility
- To recover from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injuries)v
- Repetitive strain injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome
- Postural problems
- Osteoarthritis pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Muscle tension or spasm
Will A Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?
It should not hurt. It is important to always let me know if you are feeling uncomfortable and if the pressure is too much. Please remember that more pressure does not always mean better results. In addition, it is important to be realistic about what one massage can achieve. Undoing chronic knots and tension, built up over a lifetime, is best achieved with an integrated program that includes exercise, work on your posture, relaxation techniques and a regular program of massage.
